In recent years, a number of producers have told me that ...Jeux de vilains was ahead of its time. With its slightly offbeat style, original narrative structure and difficult and violent subject matter, the film deals with the destructive build-up of emotional suffering and revenge.
Apart from Canal Plus who highly appreciated, bought and screened the film, audiences at the time were not consistently exposed to scenes of violence as they are today and therefore the violence of the protagonist’s final, revengeful act was so psychologically disturbing that the film’s artistic qualities and originality were overlooked. The film was misunderstood by many back then. Today, however, is a different story. It has been rediscovered.
